India minister commissions first unit of 1,000-MW Tehri

India Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde formally commissioned the 1,000 Tehri Dam hydroelectric project July 30 on the Bhagirathi River in Uttaranchal State.

Shinde officiated at commissioning of the first 250-MW unit, which was synchronized to India’s northern grid. Also participating were Uttaranchal Power Minister Amrita Rawat and Tehri Hydro Development Corp. (THDC) Chairman R.K. Sharma. THDC is a joint venture of the Indian government and Uttaranchal State.

All four units are to be commissioned within the next two to three months, Shinde said.

The Tehri complex eventually will total 2,400 MW, including 1,000-MW Tehri Dam, 1,000-MW Tehri Pumped-Storage project, and 400-MW Koteshwar project.
