Verbund approves turbine model tests of Austria’s 480-MW Limberg 2

Voith Siemens Hydro Power Generation reported April 13 the successful model testing for two 240-MW pump-turbines it is to supply to Austria’s 480-MW Limberg 2 pumped-storage project.

The successful model test acceptance at Heidenheim by Verbund Austrian Hydro Power AG allows Voith Siemens to begin the manufacturing phase. The manufacturer received a 33 million euro (US$42.2 million) contract for the pump-turbines in 2006. (HNN 7/5/06)

Verbund plans to build an underground powerhouse as part of the Glockner Kaprun scheme, near the 240-MW Kaprun project. (HNN 3/27/07) The pumped-storage project will employ the existing storage reservoirs of Mooserboden and Wasserfallboden. Limberg 2 is to be operated to balance load changes in the grid and to ensure safe and stable grid operation.

Voith Siemens is to supply two 240-MW reversible vertical Francis pump-turbines and governor equipment. The first unit is to be commissioned in 2011, with construction to be complete in 2012.

Voith Siemens said the machines’ optimum design posed an engineering challenge because the units’ head will vary between 288 and 436 meters, depending on water level of the huge storage lakes having a capacity of more than 80 million cubic meters.
