The head of Peru’s private investment agency announced 15 hydropower projects totaling 19,285 MW are being prepared for investment offerings.
Executive Director David Lemor Bezdin of Agencia de Promocion de la Inversion Privada (ProInversion) told a congressional commission September 2 that the projects range from 220 MW to 7,550 MW. The official said some of the projects have been turned over to ProInversion by the Ministerio de Energia y Minas, while others are still in process.
Energy and Mines Minister Juan Valdivia said in June his ministry would be turning 15 hydro projects over to the investment agency. (HNN 6/26/08) Valdivia said ProInversion would undertake studies to determine the projects’ potential for concession offerings.
Peru’s government-owned news agency, Andina, listed the 15 hydro projects: 915-MW Balsas, 600-MW Chadin 2, 444-MW Chaglla, 825-MW Cumba, 800-MW Cuquipampa, 220-MW Guitarra, 1,355-MW Ina 200, 286-MW Man 270, 7,550-MW Manseriche, 1,379-MW Paquitzapango, 1,525-MW Rentema, 1,074-MW Sumabeni, 620-MW Tambo P. Prado, 942-MW Urub 320, and 750-MW Vizcatan.
Lemor also said the El Platanal 2 Etapa, a 50- to 100-MW second stage to the 220-MW El Platanal hydroelectric project, is being presented as a private initiative.
Developer Compania Electrica El Platanal (Celepsa) already is building the initial 220-MW El Platanal, including Paucarcocha Dam with a reservoir of 70 million cubic meters on the Canete River south of Lima. (HNN 8/6/07)
El Platanal 2 is intended to further reinforce the Canete River Basin with a system of dams with a minimum total capacity of 175 million cubic meters. In addition to the added hydropower generation, the US$450 million second stage is to expand irrigation for cultivation of at least 27,000 hectares.
ProInversion is performing a study of valuation of El Platanal 2 project area lands as well as a technical and economic analysis of the private initiative proposal.
