Zambia seeks studies, design for three small hydro plants

The government of Zambia invites expressions of interest from consultants to perform feasibility studies and engineering design of three small hydroelectric projects in Zambia’s Northwestern Province. Responses to three solicitations are due February 4.

Zambia’s Rural Electrification Authority (REA) seeks consultants for the work under a World Bank-funded program to increase access to electricity services. In 2010, power supplier Copperbelt Energy Corp. recruited contractors for a larger project in Northwestern Province, the 40-MW Kabompo Gorge hydroelectric project on the Kabompo River.

REA currently seeks consultants in three separate solicitations to carry out feasibility studies and detailed engineering design of the 500-kW Kasanjiku and 3-MW Chikata Falls mini-hydropower stations in Kabompo District, and 700-kW Zengamina 2 mini-hydro plant, which is the second phase of the recently built 700-kW Zengamina project in Mwinilunga District.

In each case, selected consultants are to determine feasibility of the projects and, if they are feasible, produce detailed engineering drawings and bid documents, and assist in bid evaluation. There also is potential, under later contracts, for the selected consultants to supervise civil works, supply, installation, testing, and commissioning of the projects.

Expressions of interest and qualifications are to be deposited by 2:30 p.m. February 4 in the tender box at the address below. Submissions are to be labeled “Expressions of Interest for Consultancy Services of Feasibility Study and Detailed Engineering Design of the proposed Kasanjiku Mini-Hydropower Station,” or “… Zengamina II Mini-Hydropower Station,” or “… Chikata Falls Mini-Hydropower Station.”
