Nova Scotia Power announces plans to upgrade 13-MW Lequille hydro plant

Nova Scotia Power announces it is investing nearly $4 million to ensure the reliability, safety and efficiency of the 13-MW Lequille small hydro plant.

Work being performed includes:

  • Refurbishment of the generator
  • Replacement of the pipeline and switchgear
  • Installation of a new control system and instrumentation

Nova Scotia Power crews and contractors will be carrying out the project, according to a press release. Brown Bros Excavating Limited will be working on the penstock replacement.

“We continually assess our facilities to determine if and when upgrades are needed to ensure we can safely and reliably deliver service to customers,” said Wes Trimper, hydro superintendent with Nova Scotia Power. “This investment in Lequille will support Nova Scotia Power’s efforts to transition to more renewable energy generation.”

The Lequille powerhouse on the Allain River began operating in 1968. The system consists of three storage reservoirs and a 3-mile-long canal that diverts water flow to a concrete intake structure. A woodstave penstock conveys water to the powerhouse.

Work at the facility is expected to be complete by the end of this year.

Lequille is one of 33 hydroelectric generating stations located along 17 river systems across the province of Nova Scotia.

In 2016, Nova Scotia Power reached a record 28% of renewable electricity generation, the company says. Nova Scotia Power operates one tidal and 33 hydro stations, along with generating electricity from coal, pet coke, natural gas, oil, wind and biomass facilities.
