A bombing has been reported at the 900-MW Arun III hydro project being constructed in Nepal.
News agencies are reporting that the compound wall on the south side of the facility suffered minor damage. The party responsible for the bombing has not been identified.
Arun III was scheduled to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a few weeks.
The run-of-river project is located on the Arun River in the Sankhuwasabha district. It is being developed by SJVN Ltd. The memorandum of understanding to develop Arun III was signed in March 2008 and the project development agreement was signed in 2014.
The Arun III facility will consist of a 70-m-high concrete gravity dam with a crest length of 808 m. The underground powerhouse will contain four 225-MW vertical Francis turbine-generator units.
The project is expected to cost US$854.4 million to develop. Construction is being financed on a 70:30 debt equity ratio.
In other recent news in Nepal, Peoples Energy Public Ltd. signed a memorandum of understanding with Chongqing Water Turbine Works Company Ltd. (CWTW) to develop and construct the 48.8-MW Khimti II hydropower project on the Khimti Khola River.
