Video insights from HydroVision International: Alejandro Moreno, U.S. Department of Energy

Alejandro Moreno is director of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Water Power Technologies Office, in the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy.

In this role, Moreno manages efforts to develop and commercialize innovative technologies and market solutions for clean, domestic power generation from hydropower and marine energy resources across the U.S. The program funds research, development and deployment of water power systems through competitively selected, cost-shared projects with businesses, federal, state and other stakeholder groups.

Moreno actually started the first-ever water power research program at DOE in 2008, designing the original federal R&D program for marine energy. He also managed the first nationwide assessments of the potential for new hydropower in the U.S.

We had an opportunity to conduct a video interview with Moreno at HydroVision International 2019, where he was a speaker. Click above to hear about DOE’s recently released Workforce Development for U.S. Hydropower report, some of the key findings, and what can be done to deal with potential hydro workforce attrition. Moreno also discusses the top technologies that are finalists for its FAST Commissioning for Pumped-Storage Hydropower award competition.
