Contract awarded for 1,200-MW Pinnapuram Integrated Renewable Energy Pumped Storage Project in India

AFRY India says it received a letter of award from Greenko Energy Projects Ltd. to provide detailed design engineering services for the 1,200-MW Pinnapuram Integrated Renewable Energy Pumped Storage Project in the southern part of India,

AFRY India says this is a first-of-its-kind pumped storage project to be developed by an independent power producer in India. The project is funded by multi financial institutions and equity partners from India & the Middle East. The total contract value, awarded in March, is about US$2.5 million, and the project duration is about 36 months.

The Pinnapuram project is located in Pinnapuram village of Andhra Pradesh state. The project has upper and lower reservoirs impounded by 9.6-km-long, 42-m-high rockfill dams, a power intake, pumping intake, six tunnels and penstock pipes, and a subsurface powerhouse complex containing eight variable speed reversible turbine-generator units.

Greenko is a renewable energy owner and operator in India. The company has projects under construction with licensed capacity of 584.1 MW, comprising two wind projects with a licensed capacity of 160 MW, six hydro power projects with a licensed capacity of 244.1 MW and six solar energy projects with a licensed capacity of 180 MW. There are also six hydro projects under active development with a total licensed capacity of 369 MW. And the company is constructing two integrated renewable energy storage projects (IRESP), Pinnapuram and the Saundati Pumped Storage Project, with a total pumped storage capacity of 2,460 MW. The IRESPs are expected to harness the power of solar and wind resources with digitally connected storage infrastructure to provide scheduled and flexible power to the grid.

Per Greenko’s website, when completed Pinnapuram will feature the 1,200-MW pumped storage powerhouse, as well as a 2,000-MW solar plant and a 400-MW wind farm.
