ANDRITZ to modernize, digitalize 1,050-MW Sobradinho hydropower plant in Brazil

ANDRITZ has signed a contract with Companhia Hidrelétrica do São Francisco (CHESF) to modernize and digitalize the 1,050-MW Sobradinho hydropower plant, located on the São Francisco River in northeastern Brazil.

The order value is more than €40 million and the estimated completion date is 2025.

Sobradinho, in Bahia State, is more than 40 years old, having begun operating in 1979.

ANDRITZ will supply new electromechanical equipment (including medium- and low-voltage cubicles), automation and control systems, spillway and water intake, conditioning monitoring system, HIPASE technology for synchronization, excitation, turbine governor and protection, repair services for step-up and station service transformers, cooling and ventilation systems, and intake gates. The company will also overhaul the six vertical Kaplan turbines.

The contract includes the engineering, management, supply of equipment, installation materials and field installation training for the project.

CHESF, a subsidiary of Eletrobrás, has a total installed capacity of 10,670 MW.
