Albania Prime Minister Sali Berisha said February 2 that hydropower projects, ports, airports, roads, and other important infrastructure projects either will be privatized or granted in concessions to private entities beginning in 2007.
Berisha spoke to a seminar on public-private partnerships that was organized by the Ministry of Public Affairs, Transport, and Telecommunications in cooperation with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
“We are decided to act quickly in this field,” the prime minister said. “We will be concessionaires in airports — Rinas already is one — in energy water plants, in highways, etc. … I assure you that the government, quite confident in the private sector and to this kind of cooperation, will be committed to support the development and the adoption of the best existing laws.”
Berisha called engagement of the private sector in constructing and reconstructing the Balkan nation “an essential issue.”
