Andritz VA Tech unit to equip 24-MW Albbruck-Dogern weir plant

Rheinkraftwerk Albbruck-Dogern AG has awarded a 20 million euro (US$27.28 million) contract to VA Tech Escher Wyss GmbH to equip a new 24-MW weir power station at the 84-MW Albbruck-Dogern project on the Rhine River.

VA Tech Escher Wyss, a unit of Andritz VA Tech Hydro, is to supply a bulb turbine with a runner diameter of 6.1 meters and 24 MW of capacity. The generator is to be directly coupled to the horizontal turbine shaft, with the entire generator housing submerged in the river.

Rheinkraftwerk Albbruck-Dogern, a subsidiary of Germany utility RWE, recently completed rehabilitation of the weir on the Rhine, which forms the border between Germany and Switzerland. The new equipment is to be installed in an additional powerhouse on the Swiss side of the river.

Going on line in late 2009, the plant is to provide flows in a bypassed reach to enhance habitat. The investment also includes a fish ladder allowing several species to pass upstream to Lake Constance.
