Australia engineer wins contract for Rwanda’s 28-MW Nyabarongo

India contractor Angelique International Ltd. has awarded a subcontract to Australia’s Snowy Mountains Engineering Corp. (SMEC) to provide engineering services for the 28-MW Nyabarongo hydroelectric project on Rwanda’s Nyabarongo River.

SMEC is to provide consultancy services for review of a detailed project report, preparation of technical specifications, and detailed engineering and drawings.

Rwanda’s Ministry of Infrastructure awarded a 4 billion rupee (US$95 million) turnkey contract for Nyabarongo in 2008 to a consortium of Angelique and India’s Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. Rwanda Energy Minister Albert Butare launched construction of the project in December. (HNN 12/29/08)

SMEC said the subcontract to its SMEC India unit, is the corporation’s first project in Rwanda. Under terms of financing from the Export-Import Bank of India, India companies are to build the project with 85 percent of the equipment to come from India.

Sudan names SMEC to review impacts of three hydro projects

The Sudan government named SMEC to perform an environmental and social impact assessment of three hydroelectric projects on the Nile River north of Khartoum.

SMEC is to perform the work for the Dams Implementation Unit of the government of Sudan, which has been pursuing several hydropower projects, including major developments under the multi-nation Eastern Nile Technical Regional Office. (HNN 2/5/09)

The Dams Implementation Unit previously named SMEC and Coyne et Bellier of France for design review and preparation of contract documents for a project to increase the height of the 280-MW Roseires Dam on the Blue Nile. (HNN 8/29/08)
