Brookfield purchases 6-MW Raquette River projects in New York

Brookfield Power announced Feb. 14 it completed the acquisition of two U.S. hydroelectric plants in New York totaling 6 MW.

Brookfield bought the 3-MW Hewittville (No. 2498) and 3-MW Unionville (No. 2499) projects, both on the Raquette River, from Raquette Hydro Power Ltd. The purchase price was not disclosed.

The acquisition is consistent with Brookfield’s strategy of expanding its renewable energy portfolio. All power generated will be sold under a power purchase agreement to Niagara Mohawk Power Corp., a New York electricity distributor.

Brookfield Chief Executive Officer Harry Goldgut said the Raquette River plants fit well with the company’s portfolio in New York, which totals more than 800 MW of hydro capacity. Brookfield already is renovating four nearby hydro plants in its 18-MW Lower Raquette River project (No. 2330), East Norfolk, Norfolk, Norwood, and Raymondville. (HNN 1/31/07)
