Canada firm provides support system to N.Z.’s Mighty River

Hydro utility Mighty River Power Ltd. has awarded a contract to Synexus Global Inc. of Canada to supply a decision support system for its electricity system, which includes nine hydroelectric plants.

Synexus is to develop and implement a Hydro Advisory Tool based on its Vista DSS software product. The contract requires implementation of RealTime Vista software as well as development of new functions, including frequency regulation, Synexus said.

The Hydro Advisory Tool is to help Mighty River Power respond to New Zealand’s real-time electricity spot market by optimizing plant unit commitment and loading, based on forecasted conditions, over the subsequent four hours. Updating will be performed every half-hour or, on demand, every five minutes.

The 12-month project includes software licenses, development, customization, installation, on-site testing, staff training, and maintenance and support.

Mighty River Power’s nine power plants have 39 generating units on the Waikato River cascade, totaling 1,056 MW.
