Cavico to build tunnel for Vietnam’s 180-MW Hua Na

Contractor Viet Nam Machinery Installation Corp. (Lilama) has named Cavico Corp. to build a diversion tunnel and cofferdam for the 180-MW Hua Na hydroelectric project on the Chu River in Vietnam’s Nghe An Province.

Cavico said the contract is worth US$4.9 million. The hydro project is to require an investment of about US$250 million, Cavico said. Upon completion in five years, Hua Na is to generate 706 million kilowatt-hours annually.

Lilama received a 2.6 trillion dong (US$164.8 million) contract in 2008 to build Hua Na on an engineering-procurement-construction basis. (HNN 3/25/08) Lilama received the contract from Hua Na Hydropower Joint Stock Co., a joint venture of Lilama and another state-owned company, Petrovietnam.

Hua Na is to include a reservoir of 5,345 square kilometers, two 3,826-meter tunnels, and a powerhouse with two turbine-generators. Lilama is to be responsible for design, purchase of equipment, installation, and construction of the project.
