Consortium to help expand 3,200-MW Yacyreta

Entidad Binacional Yacyreta (EBY) has signed an US$11 million contract for the second phase of works on the Aguapey project, part of the completion of the 3,200-MW Yacyreta hydroelectric project on the Parana River dividing Argentina and Paraguay.

Business News Americas reported the contract went to a consortium of Iecsa of Argentina and Cesar Daniel Delgado of Paraguay for flood protection works.

Once completed, the work will increase the Yacyreta reservoir level to 83 meters above sea level from the current 76 meters. The higher water level will increase generation by 64 percent to 19,545 gigawatt-hours per year, EBY said.

EBY previously awarded a US$30 million contract to the consortium to build an alternative channel for the Aguapey River on the Paraguay side of the project.
