Developer to offer 15-MW tidal project to BC Hydro

Orca Tidal Power Corp. proposes to develop a 15-MW tidal power project to be offered to BC Hydro under the utility’s Clean Power Call for electricity.

Orca Power Corp. of Vancouver announced Oct. 6 its Orca Tidal Power subsidiary is preparing documentation required for a 15-MW bid in BC Hydro’s Clean Power Call. (HNN 6/13/08) The company originally registered a 10-MW bid for a project in British Columbia’s Campbell River area.

Orca Tidal Power said it plans to use proprietary technology for its project but did not provide details. Orca Power Inc., now Orca Power Corp., previously submitted six applications to the Ministry of Agriculture and Lands to investigate ocean energy projects in the Vancouver Island region. The Integrated Land Management Bureau is reviewing those applications.

Creation Casinos Inc., a company reported to have experience running casinos in Lithuania, purchased Orca Power Inc., a private company engaged in the research of tidal power in British Columbia. Creation Casinos renamed itself Orca Power Corp. in July.

Several other developers also have registered to submit proposals in the Clean Power Call, including Hawkeye Energy Corp., which proposes 12 run-of-river hydroelectric projects totaling 180 MW. (HNN 10/2/08) The province-owned utility set a Nov. 25 deadline for proposals from all registered bidders.
