Dominican generator plans include 762 MW of hydro

State-owned hydro generator Empresa de Generacion Hidroelectrica (Egehid) has announced expansion plans that include development of 15 hydropower projects totaling 762 MW between 2006 and 2012.

In its Expansion Plan 2006-2012, reported by Business News Americas, Egehid, a subsidiary of national utility Corporacion Dominicana de Empresas Electricas Estatales, said the program will require investment of US$1.44 billion.

The generator said six of the projects already are under construction. Of those, the 900-kW Las Barias project is to go on line this year at a cost of US$6.2 million, followed by three more in 2007: 50-MW Pinalito for US$186 million, 3.2-MW Magueyal for US$9.6 million, and 2.8-MW Pryn Brazo Derecho for US$13.2 million.

Going on line in 2008 are the 10-MW Hatillo Expansion for US$15.1 million, which is under construction, and the 5-MW Las Damas repowering for US$4.8 million, whose construction has been contracted.

In 2009, the 100-MW Palomino, which is under construction, is to go on line for US$225 million. That will be followed in 2010 by 87-MW Las Placetas, whose construction has been contracted, for US$285 million. In May, Brazil’s national development bank, BNDES, approved export financing for Palomino and Las Placetas, which are to be built by Brazil’s Construtora Norberto Odebrecht and Construtora Andrade Gutierrez respectively. The 45-MW Artibonito is to go on line in 2011 for US$160 million. The construction of all five has been contracted.

The remaining two projects, to be completed in 2012, are in the definitive design or feasibility stages. They are the 300-MW Hidrobombeo Camu for US$150 million and 105-MW Manabao-Bejucal-Tavera for US$200 million.

Egehid, which already has 21 hydro projects in operation totaling 469 MW, also is implementing a supervisory control and data acquisition system that is more than 70 percent complete.
