Ecuador utility awards civil works contract for 26-MW Ocana

Ecuador utility Empresa Generadora del Austro S.A. (ElecAustro) has awarded a contract to an Ecuador company for civil construction of the 26-MW Ocana hydroelectric project in Ecuador’s Canar Province.

ElecAustro chief executive Antonio Borrero signed a contract in March with Esteban Sevilla Quintana, representing the winning bidder, Sevilla y Martinez Ingenieros C.A. (Semaica). Semaica was selected to construct civil works, pressure pipes, and related equipment for Ocana.

Main civil works include a diversion structure, intake, desander, pressure tank, steel conduit and tunnel of 6.4 kilometers, regulating reservoir, surge shaft, penstock, and powerhouse.

ElecAustro previously awarded a contract to Alstom Hydro Espana SL for manufacture and supply of hydro-mechanical equipment for Ocana. (HNN 2/18/09) Additionally, Siemens S.A. Ecuador is to supply transformers, substation, and a supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system.

The University of Cuenca received a contract to oversee the processes and competition for construction, equipment, and placing in operation of Ocana. Outstanding contracts include installation of turbines and generators; and construction of civil works, supply, and installation of Ocana’s transmission line.
