MAPUTO, Mozambique 11/18/11 (PennWell) — Mozambique’s state-owned power utility Electricidade de Mocambique (EDM) will take over two “abandoned” hydroelectric dams, wire services report.
The Mozambican cabinet approved a decree transferring ownership of the Chicamba and Mavuzi hydropower plants to EDM, as the original owner “abandoned” the facilities 1978, according to cabinet spokesman Alberto Nkutumula.
Nkutumula said EDM will take over the dams’ machinery, electric lines and substations. The dams are more than 40 years old andhave a generating capacity of 88 MW. They are connected to the national grid and, along with the 2,040-MW Cahora Bassa dam, will supply energy to central Mozambique and neighboring Zimbabwe.
