Ethiopia seeks grid link for 1,870-MW Gilgel Gibe 3

Ethiopian Electric Power Corp. (EEPCo) seeks bids to construct transmission lines to carry power from the 1,870-MW Gilgel Gibe 3 hydroelectric project, under construction on Ethiopia’s Omo River.

EEPCo called for offers from qualified contractors in a notice on its Internet site, but did not state a deadline for responses. It invited contractors with experience in transmission lines of 400 kilovolts and higher to submit offers “by securing the finance requirement of the project through suitable lines of credit/supplier’s credit/buyer’s credit.”

EEPCo previously awarded an engineering-procurement-construction contract for Gilgel Gibe 3 to Salini Costruttori SpA of Italy. In April, it took bids to supply electro-mechanical equipment for the hydro project. (HNN 2/20/08)

The transmission tender has three components for each 400-kV line route: Gilgel Gibe 3 to Wolayta Sodo, Wolayta Sodo to 420-MW Gilgel Gibe 2 (HNN 3/7/06), and Wolayta Sodo to Addis Ababa.
