Facebook “likes” hydroelectric power

A new 290,000-square-foot data center built by Facebook is run entirely on hydroelectric power, the social media giant has announced.

The center — located in Lulea, Sweden — is Facebook’s first outside of the United States and was selected intentionally due to the region’s abundance of hydro power.

The town sits along Sweden’s Lule River, which, according to the data center’s design firm, DPR Construction, produces about 13.6 million MWh of hydroelectric power per year.

“Not only is it 100% renewable, but the supply is also so reliable that we have been able to reduce the number of backup generators required at the site by more than 70%,” the company said on Lulea Data Center’s Facebook page.
