Free Flow Power, Energy Systems Group explore partnership

Hydrokinetic project developer Free Flow Power Corp. and energy services company Energy Systems Group LLC are considering joint development of projects on the Mississippi and Ohio rivers.

Free Flow Power of Boston and Energy Systems Group of Evansville, Ind., announced May 28 they entered into a memorandum of understanding to explore development of hydrokinetic facilities on the river systems. (HNN 1/23/08) The companies have 180 days to complete an agreement that would specify the role each firm would play in development, and the magnitude of each firm’s investment and resources.

We believe this relationship will fully complement our strategy of working with established market participants to integrate hydrokinetics into existing power producer portfolios, Free Flow Power Chief Executive Officer Dan Irvin said.

Free Flow Power said it has active applications or permits from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission for 107 projects on five river systems: Mississippi, 55; Ohio, 22; Missouri, 28; Detroit, 1; and Niagara, 1. (HNN 5/8/08) All of the projects, if fully developed as proposed, represent a total capacity of about 3,000 MW, Irvin said.

The MOU does not specify which sites on the Mississippi and Ohio rivers that Free Flow Power and Energy Systems Group would work together to develop.

Energy Systems Group offers a number of services, including project development, management and operations, engineering, financing, and implementation. Its core business is performance contracting, using energy efficiency, technology, and long-term financing to help building owners modernize their facilities.
