Georgia agencies name builder for Hickory Log Creek Dam

Cobb County-Marietta Water Authority and the city of Canton awarded a $36.5 million contract to Thalle Construction Co., to build Hickory Log Creek Dam near Canton, north of Atlanta. The owners said the dam would be the tallest non-federal dam in Georgia.

Thalle is to build the 180-foot-tall, 970-foot-long roller-compacted-concrete gravity structure and ancillary facilities. Work will include placement of 230,000 cubic yards of RCC and 20,000 cubic yards of mass and reinforced concrete, earth backfill, and erosion and sediment control measures. The company also will clear the site for the reservoir, build roads, and install gates, valves, and piping.

Hickory Log Creek Dam will create a water supply reservoir. Cobb County-Marietta Water Authority will own 75 percent of the project, and the city of Canton will own the rest.

The water authority’s board approved the contract award at a meeting Aug. 21. Construction could begin in September.

Schnabel Engineering South LLC is project engineer and part of a design team, which includes consultant Brown &Caldwell. Brown &Caldwell will design the intake structure, a pumping plant, and water supply pipeline.
