Grid link sought to ship 2,040-MW Cahora Bassa power to Malawi

Utility Electricidade de Mozambique (EDM) invites applications for pre-qualification to build a transmission line and substation to carry 300 MW from Mozambique’s 2,040-MW Cahora Bassa hydroelectric project to consumers in Malawi. Responses are due June 29.

The government of Mozambique has requested funds from the World Bank’s International Development Association to finance the Mozambique-Malawi Interconnector. In December, hydro operator Hidroelectrica de Cahora Bassa won an international power supply solicitation by Electricity Supply Commission of Malawi. (HNN 1/19/07) Cahora Bassa, on the Zambezi River, is to supply 100 to 200 MW by 2009, with the amount later increasing to 300 MW.

In separate tenders, EDM plans to seek bids for:
o A 220-kilovolt transmission line from the Matambo, Mozambique substation to the Malawi border; and
o a 220-kV extension at the Matambo substation.

Pre-qualification documents for each contract, in English, may be obtained from the address below for US$50 in cash to Bank Account 7849201357 MTn in Millennium BIM, Maputo, Mozambique, SWIFT CODE: BIMOMZMX. Proof of payment and an address for delivery of documents should be sent by fax to (258) 21-322074.

In both cases, applications for pre-qualification are due by 5 p.m. June 29 to the addresses below. Three copies go to the first address and one to the second address. Applications are to be labeled:
o Application to Pre-qualify for: Southern Africa Power Market (APL2): Mozambique-Malawi 220 kV Interconnector Project Design, Supply, and Installation of the 220 kV Overhead Transmission Line from the Matambo Substation (Mozambique) to the Mozambique-Malawi Border Contract No. 03/2007 or
