Hydropower Sustainability Assessment Protocol officially adopted by IHA

The International Hydropower Association (IHA) has announced that the final version of the Hydropower Sustainability Assessment Protocol was formally adopted by its members on November 16, 2010.

The Hydropower Sustainability Assessment Protocol is a sustainability assessment framework for hydropower development and operation. It enables the production of a sustainability profile for a project through the assessment of performance within important sustainability topics, IHA stated.

To reflect the different stages of hydropower development, the protocol includes four assessment sections, which have been designed to be used as stand-alone documents. These sections are supported by a fifth section, providing background to the applied sections.

The assessment sections are:
– Early Stage
– Preparation
– Implementation
– Operation

IHA is currently inviting expressions of interest from hydro project sponsors wanting to participate as Sustainability Partners, actively supporting protocol implementation. Interested parties should contact Cameron Ironside, IHA Programme Director, at ci@hydropower.org.
