Lithuania utility again extends bidding for new unit at 900-MW Kruonis

Lithuanian utility Lietuvos Energija AB again extended the deadline for bids to supply and install a new generating unit at the 900-MW Kruonis pumped-storage project at Elektrenai, Lithuania. Bids now are due March 29.

Lietuvos Energija previously called for bids by January 26 and November 29. The utility also again delayed the start and completion dates for construction. Work now is to begin in August 2011 and be completed in May 2016.

Lietuvos Energija awarded a contract in 2007 to VA Tech Hydro to supply four replacement turbines and associated equipment to refurbish Kruonis, which was built by the Soviet Union in the 1960s. The utility’s shareholders voted in 2008 to spin off Kruonis and the 100-MW Kaunas hydroelectric project into separate companies to comply with a European Union directive requiring utilities to separate their transmission functions from their generation and supply businesses.

Lietuvos Energija seeks bids to supply and install a new 250-MW variable-speed turbine-generator to expand Kruonis.

The deadline for obtaining solicitation documents also was extended to March 22. Bids in English or Lithuanian now are due by 1 p.m. March 29. Tendering and communication with bidders are to be conducted via a central public procurement information system on the Internet at
