Madeira seeks reconstruction of hydropower system intakes

FUNCHAL, Portugal 11/10/11 (PennWell) — The electric utility of the Portuguese island of Madeira seeks bids to rehabilitate the network of water intakes that feeds its hydroelectric projects. Bids are due December 5.

Empresa de Electricidade da Madeira SA (EEM) took bids in 2010 for construction of a dam and expansion of irrigation canals to expand the Calheta hydroelectric system, which includes the 4.57-MW Calheta hydro plant and the 7.3-MW Calheta de Inverno plant

In the current solicitation, EEM seeks conservation work on the network of intakes that feeds its hydroelectric plants. Work is to include the use of explosives in the process of excavation and the recovery and reconstruction hydraulic works and ancillary works. EEM plans to name three firms to a three-year framework agreement covering canals, tunnels, and diverse dams and other facilities.

Tender documents may be obtained for 200 euros (US$272) from the address below until 5 p.m. November 30.
