Malawi seeks EPC contractor to double size of 64-MW Kapichira

Electricity Supply Corp. of Malawi (Escom) invites expressions of interest from contractors to add another 64 MW to the 64-MW Kapichira hydroelectric project on the Shire River. Responses are due March 6.

The first phase of Kapichira was completed in 2000 at 64 MW, although it was designed as a 128-MW project. (HydroWorld 11/27/06)

Escom seeks design, supply, installation, and commissioning of two 32-MW turbine-generators, controls, transformers, switchgear, and a transmission line to the Blantyre West Substation. Civil works are to be minimal since most major civil works were included in the first phase of development.

The engineering-procurement-construction contract is to include a review and update of the project’s development feasibility study to accommodate emerging changes in capacity and condition of Kapichira Reservoir in view of increasing siltation problems in Malawi’s river systems. Work also is to include detailed designs and costing of all components including a comprehensive sediment monitoring and management program.

Other work includes development of a detailed work implementation schedule; construction, supply, and installation of works; commissioning; and training of operating staff.

Expressions of interest are due by 2 p.m. March 6 to The Chairman at the address below. Short-listed firms are to be invited in March to submit bids. A contract is to be awarded in July.
