Nicaragua licenses five projects totaling 80 MW

Energy regulator Instituto Nicaraguense de Energia (INE) has approved provisional power generation licenses for five hydro projects in a portfolio managed by national utility Comision Nacional de Energia (CNE).

Business News Americas reported INE issued the licenses to Nicaraguan companies for the Salto Y-Y, Pajaritos, Consuelo, La Estrella, and Piedra Puntuda projects, which total a minimum of 80 MW.

The provisional licenses authorize the companies to carry out remaining project studies, which are to be completed in the first half of 2007, prior to requesting formal power generation licenses.

CNE is managing a portfolio of 12 hydropower projects totaling 150 MW, which are at different stages of development, a CNE official said. (HNN 8/18/06) The government intends to develop Nicaragua’s renewable hydropower resources due to increasing fuel prices affecting thermal generation.
