Nicaraguan officials report receiving initial inquiries from ten companies responding to a presentation of 12 hydroelectric projects for development.
The government is accepting expressions of interest from the private sector to develop the sites, which total 150 MW. The projects are at different stages of development including design, pre-feasibility, and feasibility.
An official of Nicaragua’s Comision Nacional de Energia told Business News Americas about 20 Nicaraguan and international firms attended the August 3 presentation in Managua. The official identified participants as Enel of Italy and companies from Denmark, Norway, and Spain.
Ten firms requested additional information about the portfolio. Of those, two already have taken the first step to contact Nicaraguan regulator Instituto Nicaraguense de Energia for necessary forms to carry out remaining studies.
If the projects proceed, the developers then would have to secure environmental and water use permits and generation licenses.
