Patel wins tunnel contract for India’s 600-MW Loharinag Pala

India’s NTPC Ltd. has awarded a contract to Patel Engineering Ltd. to build a headrace tunnel for the 600-MW Loharinag Pala hydroelectric project on the Bhagirathi River in Uttaranchal State.

The 3.18 billion rupee (US$69 million) contract includes a 13-kilometer-long horseshoe-shaped tunnel, 6 meters in diameter. The concrete-lined structure will be built on the right bank of the river through three access adits by a drill and blast technique.

NTPC recently awarded a 2.46 billion rupee (US$53.55 million) contract to Hindustan Construction Co. Ltd. to build a dam and desilting chamber for Loharinag Pala. The four-unit run-of-river project is to be completed in 38 months.
