Powers takes over as executive director of USSD

Sharon Powers is the new executive director of the U.S. Society on Dams, effective Oct. 30.

Previously, Powers was director of administration for the American Water Works Association. She and her staff were responsible for customer service, conference registration, facility management, purchasing and contracts. She created “a business plan for a new philanthropic initiative for the association, and directed the development effort for the scholarship program, student and young professional programs, and Community Engineering Corps.”

USSD says Powers has extensive experience in strategic planning, communications, operations, government relations, public relations and marketing.

“Sharon quickly rose to the top [of the list of potential candidates], with her intelligence, work ethic, experience and congenial nature,” said Denise Bunte-Bisnett, secretary-treasurer of USSD and leader of the search team.

“Dams and levee systems are an integral part of maintaining sustainable water sources, and I’m excited to be joining USSD as its Executive Director,” Powers said.
