Puget invites utilities to update design standards

Washington utility Puget Sound Energy invites other utilities to join it in an effort to update and organize its Hydro Design Standards.

PSE wants to update standards on electrical, mechanical, and civil design to support its rehabilitation of hydro facilities. The updated standards also would provide a permanent resource for ongoing operation and maintenance.

The utility plans to include materials, construction methods, and best practices in the updated standards.

Rather than “reinventing the wheel,” PSE seeks input from other hydro operators who have already documented such information. Senior electrical engineer Chris D. Brown said PSE would share the completed standards with utilities that provide their information.

Brown said PSE currently is receiving responses from utilities and formalizing a table of contents for the standards. The utility plans to complete the project by the end of 2009.
