Rutter to provide engineering for 196-MW East Toba-Montrose

Contractor Peter Kiewit Sons Co. has awarded a C$2.9 million (US$2.89 million) contract to Rutter Inc. for electrical engineering and for protection and control systems technology for the 196-MW East Toba-Montrose project in British Columbia.

Rutter Hinz Inc., Rutter’s controls and automation division, is to design electrical systems in the project’s 123-MW East Toba River and 73-MW Montrose Creek powerhouses. It also is to design and supply the control and protection system, and coordinate electrical engineering tasks with Kiewit and others. Rutter also is to design a communication system to facilitate remote control of the generating units.

Kiewit is the engineering-procurement-construction contractor for developer Plutonic Power Corp. (HNN 3/6/2008) Other contractors include Andritz VA Tech Hydro, which is to supply electro-mechanical equipment to the powerhouses. GE Energy Financial is an investor-partner in the C$660 million (US$659 million) project. (HNN 3/12/08)

East Toba-Montrose is under construction 190 kilometers northwest of Vancouver, at the headwaters of Toba Inlet. Operation of East Toba is scheduled for mid-2010, followed by commissioning of Montrose by the end of 2010.
