Trelleborg supplies lubricant-free bearings to 18,200-MW Three Gorges

Trelleborg Sealing Solutions reports it is supplying Orkot fish friendly bearings to giant hydro turbines at China’s 18,200-MW Three Gorges Dam.

The Sweden-based Trelleborg, which changed its name from Busak+Shamban in March, said its Orkot bearings were chosen for Three Gorges units by equipment manufacturer Alstom, based on independent test results.

Alstom is supplying nearly half of the turbines and generators for Three Gorges, whose initial 18,200 MW now is expected to be completed by the end of 2008. (HNN 3/26/07) Trelleborg said it is supplying bearings on wicket gate housings of turbines in the right bank powerhouse. The turbines are 10.6 meters in diameter and 5 meters tall.

The composite technology of the Orkot bearings gives long service without lubrication, compared to traditional bronze bearings, the manufacturer said. Trelleborg described them as fish friendly by preventing lubricants from contacting the water.
