U.K. firm to design 3-MW River E

Renewables developer RWE npower plc has named Mott MacDonald of the United Kingdom to provide engineering design for the 3-MW River E hydro project being built on Scotland’s River E.

Mott MacDonald is to provide detailed civil design including an intake weir with screen, 4.2-kilometer pressure pipeline, powerhouse, and tailrace pipe.

The project is on the south side of Loch Ness, 18 kilometers northeast of Fort Augustus. It would have a gross head of 280 meters, flow of 1.3 cms, and 4,000 meters of 900-millimeter-diameter pipeline.

River E received planning consent from the Scottish Executive in 2005. It is to be completed in 2007 under a Renewables Obligation initiative to help Scotland produce 18 percent of its electricity from renewables by 2010.
