Ukraine utility awards turbine replacement contract for four plants

Ukraine utility OJSC UkrHydroEnergo has awarded a contract to Ukraine turbine manufacturer Turboatom to supply replacement turbines for four hydroelectric projects in the Dnipro (or Dneprovsk) River cascade.

Turboatom said it is to supply five replacement turbines to the four plants: Unit 18 of 361-MW Kyiv (or Kiev), Units 9 and 11 of 444-MW Kaniv, Unit 2 of 352-MW Dniprodzerzhynsk, and Unit 13 of 661-MW Dnipro 2.

With a US$106 million World Bank loan, the government of the Ukraine is carrying out a hydropower rehabilitation program to improve operational stability and reliability of hydroelectric plants. (HNN 11/3/08)

Turboatom said it is developing high-efficiency rotary-blade runners of 6 meters in diameter for Kyiv and Kaniv, and of 9.3 meters for Dniprodzerzhynsk. At Dnipro 2, the manufacturer is replacing a propeller-type unit with a rotary-blade unit of 7 meters in diameter, it said. All will have bearings of new composite materials that do not require lubricants.

The manufacturer said the replacement units will increase unit capacity at Kyiv to 21 MW from 19.2 MW, at Kaniv to 23 MW from 19.2 MW, at Dniprodzerzhynsk to 50 MW from 45.4 MW, and at Dnipro 2 to 115 MW from 107 MW.

In 2008, UkrHydroEnergo awarded a contract to Turboatom to supply five replacement turbines to Kyiv, Kaniv, and 351-MW Kakhovka. (HNN 6/25/08)
