UPDATE – El Salvador delays bidding for 67-MW El Chaparral

Comision Ejecutiva Hidroelectrica del Rio Lempa (CEL) has postponed bidding for construction of the 67-MW El Chaparral hydroelectric project on El Salvador’s Torola River.

Although bidding rules were to have gone on sale August 7, a CEL official told Business News Americas the bidding process is suspended until further notice. No reason was given.

CEL had said it would seek bids by November 7 for the US$92.5 million project, which is expected to begin operation in 2010 in San Miguel Department.

CEL President Nicolas Salume previously said several hydro industry companies have expressed interest in the project including Alstom of France, Ideal of Mexico, and Voith Siemens Hydro Power Generation of Germany. CEL awarded a US$2.1 million consulting services contract in 2005 to Intertechne Consultores Associados of Brazil for preparation of construction tendering and an engineering-procurement-construction contract.
