U.S. hydro group forms ocean, tidal technology council

The National Hydropower Association announced formation of an Ocean, Tidal, and New Technologies Council to focus attention on potential growth in emerging hydro-related technologies.

The council is to collaborate with NHA’s various committees and is to provide a forum to discuss challenges faced by users of ocean, tidal, hydrokinetic, and emerging water technologies.

Areas of focus include:
o Supporting legislative efforts to secure inclusion of ocean, tidal, wave, and in-stream hydrokinetic technologies in tax incentives for renewable energy;
o Gaining recognition of such new technologies in clean energy incentive programs, such as renewables portfolio standards;
o Developing an expeditious regulatory permitting scheme;
o Creating a database of technology and regulatory information, to be used by the industry as an information tool;
o Creating a research, demonstration, and development program that will provide funding and support for further research, testing, and demonstrations of emerging technologies; and
o Promoting the role emerging technologies can play in meeting new demand for clean energy.
