Valve equipment supplier named for Austria’s 480-MW Limberg 2

Verbund Austrian Hydro Power has awarded a contract for supply of valve equipment for the 480-MW Limberg 2 pumped-storage project in Austria.

Hans Kunz GmbH of Austria was named to supply safety shut-off valves and slidegate valve chamber equipment. The manufacturer was chosen from among three bidders. The contract is to run from 2007-2011.

Verbund plans to build an underground powerhouse containing two motor-generators as part of the Glockner Kaprun scheme, near the 240-MW Kaprun project. Limberg 2 is to employ the existing storage reservoirs of Mooserboden and Wasserfallboden.

Verbund recently awarded a contract to WPK Werkstoff-Planung-Kontroll Ges.m.b.H of Austria for oversight of equipment installation at Limberg 2. (HNN 9/7/07) Voith Siemens Hydro Power Generation reported in April the successful model testing for two 240-MW pump-turbines it is to supply.

In 2006, Verbund awarded contracts to Andritz VA Tech Hydro to supply the two motor-generators, excitation systems, and steel tunnel linings of the pressure shaft and the high-head manifold. Siemens AG Osterreich is to supply switchgear. Andritz said commissioning of the first 240-MW unit is scheduled for autumn 2011, with full commercial operation in March 2012.
