Voith strengthens place in Asia’s hydroelectric power market

An order for Laos’ Nam Hinboun hydropower project and honors received for China’s 4,800-MW Jinping 2 plant reflect Voith Hydro Shanghai’s success in Asia’s growing hydro power market, the company said.

The company provided two bulb-type hydro turbines, electromechanical equipment, automation systems, transformers and switchyards for Nam Hinboun.

“The order in Laos is a major success for Voith Hydro in southeast Asia, and another landmark in our activities outside China,” said Voith Hydro Shanghai president Martin Andra.

Laos has emphasized repeatedly that it wishes to become the “battery of the region”, with the government saying it wishes to increase the country’s hydroelectric output capacity to 23,000 MW by 2030.

“We are expecting southeast Asia to become a major driving force in hydropower in the future,” Andra said.

Meanwhile, Voith Hydro Shanghai was also recently recognized by China’s Sichuan municipal government for its role with Jinping 2. Of the 160 companies associated with the project’s construction, Voith was the only one recognized by owner Ertan Hydroelectric Development Company Ltd. (EHDC) for its “good service and high quality”.
