Voith to refurbish Ireland’s 65-MW Erne, 292-MW Turlough Hill

Irish utility ESB Power Generation has awarded contracts to Voith Hydro Kraftwerkstechnik GmbH of Germany to refurbish the 65-MW Erne hydroelectric project and the 292-MW Turlough Hill pumped-storage project.

ESB recruited suppliers in 2007 to refurbish four turbine-generator sets at Erne on the Erne River in County Donegal. (HNN 9/21/07) Voith Hydro was chosen from among three bidders.

ESB sought refurbishment of two 22.5-MW turbines and generators originally supplied by KMW/Asea and commissioned in 1951 and 1952 and two 10-MW turbines and generators originally supplied by Charmilles/BBC and commissioned in 1950 and 1955.

Voith Hydro also was selected for full refurbishment of Units 1 and 3 at Turlough Hill at Glendalough in County Wicklow. The company was one of two bidders for that work.

In 2007, under its previous name Voith Siemens Hydro Power Generation, Voith Hydro was named to supply replacement governors and to refurbish a generator at Turlough Hill. (HNN 12/3/07)
