Worker at 1,100-MW Site C hydro project tests positive for COVID-19

BC Hydro confirms that a worker at its 1,100-MW Site C hydro project work camp in Fort St. John, British Columbia, tested positive for COVID-19.

The worker arrived from Alberta on July 13, and BC Hydro says this person immediately self-isolated after receiving their test results from Alberta Health Services on July 15. Northern Health provided a second test and confirmed the worker was positive on July 16. Before self-isolating, the worker had not left the camp or had any interaction with the local community, BC Hydro said.

The worker is being cared for at the on-site health clinic, which has the trained staff, facilities and supplies required to provide health care to workers in isolation or quarantine. The worker will continue isolating in their room, which is in a separate dormitory away from other workers, until they are medically cleared to leave.

Northern Health has initiated contact tracing, and workers are being reminded to self-monitor and report any symptoms as per site protocols.

BC Hydro says it has implemented extensive measures to protect the health and safety of its workers on the Site C project and reduce the potential for transmission at camp. The utility will continue to work with the Northern Health Authority and strictly follow all federal and provincial health guidelines to protect other workers in the camp and the local community.

Site C involves the construction of an earthfill dam spanning more than 1 km that rises 60 m over the riverbed of the Peace River. The principal civil engineering contract also includes major auxiliary works such as construction of 5 km of cofferdams and the two recently completed river diversion tunnels, as well as temporary access roads and bridges.
