Eco Wave Power participating in Digital Twin of the Ocean project

Wave energy developer Eco Wave Power will participate in the ILIAD Project, aimed at developing, operating and demonstrating the ILIAD Digital Twin of the Ocean (DTO).

ILIAD will commercialize an interoperable, data-intensive and cost-effective DTO, capitalizing on the explosion of new data provided by many different earth sources, modern computing infrastructure including the Internet of Things, social networking, big data, cloud computing and more, according to a release.

The ILIAD consortium has received €17 million in funding through the EU Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme. It will combine high-resolution modelling with real-time sensing of ocean parameters, advanced algorithms for forecasting of spatio-temporal events and pattern recognition. The DTO will consist of several real-time to near-real-time digital replicas of the ocean.

The project comprises of 56 partners from 18 countries in Europe, the Middle East and North Africa, and funding will be divided in accordance with each party’s contribution. Eco Wave Power will be granted €178,500 ($217,975) in the consortium agreement, to be entered in about three months.

ILIAD will assemble a diverse community of existing and new users, who will use the project’s innovative technological solutions to address their challenges. Furthermore, ILIAD will create a marketplace to distribute apps, plug-ins, interfaces, raw data, citizen science data, synthesized information and value-adding services in combination with the ILIAD DTO.

“Being part of the ILIAD ecosystem will provide essential information to Eco Wave Power, giving us a competitive advantage and contributing to the Green Deal growth strategy that will transform the EU into a modern, resource-efficient and competitive economy,” said Inna Braverman, Eco Wave Power’s chief executive officer.

ILIAD stems from the EU’s investment into policies and infrastructures that make knowledge of the ocean central to environmental and climate policies, as well as the blue economy.

The DTO aims to fill the need to integrate a wide range of data sources. It also wants to transform data into knowledge and to connect, engage and empower citizens, governments and industries by providing them with the capacity to inform their decisions. This is especially important when offshore energy-related activities are booming. Data collected will maximize environmental protection, while also making the most of the ocean for renewable energy generation.

ILIAD partners include industrial companies, end-users, academic institutions, research and technology developers and private firms. Among the participating partners are organizations such as WAVEC-Offshore Renewables, the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, University of Haifa, University College Cork- National University of Ireland, The University of Edinburgh and Technical University of Varna.

Eco Wave Power has developed a patented technology for turning ocean and sea waves into green electricity. This partnership aligns well with its purpose of fighting against climate change by enabling commercial power production from sea and ocean waves.
