Greenko names ANDRITZ to supply equipment for 1,200-MW Pinnapuram pumped storage

Greenko Anergy Private Limited has awarded a contract to ANDRITZ for the supply of electromechanical equipment for the 1,200-MW Pinnapuram pumped storage plant in Andhra Pradesh, India.

Located in the Kurnool district, the hydropower plant will be part of the first integrated renewable energy storage project combining electrical energy production based on photovoltaic solar, wind and pumped storage. Once commissioned, Pinnapuram will be the largest pumped storage scheme in India, ANDRITZ said. Commissioning of the first units is expected by 2023.

Per Greenko’s website, when completed Pinnapuram will feature the 1,200-MW pumped storage powerhouse, as well as a 2,000-MW solar plant and a 400-MW wind farm.

The pumped storage project has upper and lower reservoirs impounded by 9.6-km-long, 42-m-high rockfill dams, a power intake, pumping intake, six tunnels and penstock pipes, and a subsurface powerhouse complex containing the variable speed reversible turbine-generator units.

The contract includes design, manufacture, supply, transportation, erection, testing and commissioning of four 240-MW units, two 120-MW reversible pump units, main inlet valves and associated auxiliaries.

International technology group ANDRITZ offers a broad portfolio of plants, equipment, systems and services for the pulp and paper industry, the hydropower sector, the metals processing and forming industry, pumps, solid/liquid separation in the municipal and industrial sectors, as well as animal feed and biomass pelleting. ANDRITZ Hydro supplies electromechanical equipment and services for hydropower plants, with an installed fleet of more than 430 GW.
