Koncar to perform Albania substation refurbishment

Albanian utility Korporata Elektroenergjetike Shqiptare (KESH) has awarded a contract to Koncar Power Plant and Electric Traction Ingeneering Inc. to replace equipment at three substations.

KESH previously announced it would seek bids for substation equipment for the Albanian transmission grid and several hydroelectric projects. (HNN 12/11/06) KESH applied for a loan from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development to help fund US$52 million in substation rehabilitation.

Koncar, of Albania, was chosen for the 17.4 million euro (US$22.3 million) contract over the only other bidder, a consortium of Samsung C&T Corp. and Hyosong Corp. The work is to require 20 months.

Work includes supply and installation of equipment for Elbasan 1, Fier, and Tirana 1 substations, and control, monitoring, and protection system for Fier; and supply and installation of 120-megavolt-ampere autotransformers for Elbasan 1.
