Modernization complete on 4.5-MW Glava Zete small hydro in Montenegro

Elektroprivreda Crne Gore (EPCG) and Norwegian company NTE have completed the reconstruction and modernization of the 4.5-MW Glava Zete small hydro project in the Bjelopavlica plain, Montenegro.

The two companies also worked together to reconstruct and modernize the 1.2-MW Slape Zete small hydroelectric power plant. Slap Zete was built in 1952 and Glava Zete in 1955. Reconstruction of these two plants is part of EPCG’s investment plan, with the aim of preserving and increasing the capacity of existing small hydropower plants through reconstruction projects.

Zeta Energy Chief Executive Officer Dragan Vlahovic said that more than €8 million (US$9.5 million) had been invested in the project. Zeta Energy is a joint venture that was founded in 2010 and is majority owned by EPCG. Both facilities, since 2010, operate as part of the joint venture EPCG and NTE, and the majority owner is EPCG.

The reconstruction project included replacing all electromechanical equipment, as well as rehabilitation and adaptation of the entire construction infrastructure. Average realized production in the period before the reconstruction was 14.6 GWh, while now annual production will be 20.5 GWh, EPCG said. This significant result was achieved by increasing the efficiency of the turbine assembly and the generators. The reconstruction project also included installation of modern technology for wastewater treatment to protect the environment.

“In technical terms, the result of this investment will be an increase in production by 30 percent compared to previous production,” Vlahovic said. “During the implementation of the projects, a responsible social policy was pursued, so that there were no layoffs during the entire process. Reconstruction and modernization was carried out in compliance with all environmental standards.”
