Sinohydro, Ukraine utility in agreement for pumped-storage hydro plant

China’s Sinohydro has signed a memorandum of understanding with Ukraine utility UkrHydroEnergo to construct the Kaniv pumped-storage hydropower plant, news agencies reported.

According to Sinohydro, the designed installed capacity of the Kaniv hydroelectric plant is approximately 1,000 MW. The estimated investment is up to 1 billion Euros.

In other news, UkrHydroEnergo has awarded Emerson LLC a $1.48 million contract to supply a static frequency converter for the 225-MW Kyiv pumped-storage hydro project.

The World Bank signed a loan agreement with the Ukraine government in 2010, providing an additional $60 million in financing for Ukraine’s hydropower rehabilitation program to improve operational stability and reliability of hydroelectric plants.
