Our world has changed more than we could have imagined over the past few months, and one result is that now the need for a community connection in the hydroelectric power industry is greater than ever before.
HYDROVISION International was originally scheduled to take place July 14-16, 2020, in Minneapolis, Minn., U.S. To honor these original dates, we’re hosting an online information exchange for the global hydropower industry. The HYDRO+ Series will bring together the hydro community for perspective and discussion on issues affecting hydro resources, meeting challenges and ensuring a future sustainability of hydro.
Over three days, attendees can take advantage of up to six learning opportunities targeted to their interests. Below is a complete schedule of the topics to be presented.
Hydro Discovery Day: Focus on Generators
The new eight-hour Hydro Discovery Day training program planned for HYDROVISION International takes a “deep dive” into generators. Upon completion, participants walk away with a basic understanding of the various aspects of the design and maintenance of hydro generator and pumped storage motor/generator units, including electrical and mechanical issues.
Today’s abbreviated course—taught by an experienced generator engineer with a strong background in hydro—will help early and mid-career engineers learn how to build their expertise as a generator engineer.
Waterpower Hydro Basics
The Waterpower Hydro Basics course, organized by the Hydro Training Institute and also a staple at HYDROVISION International, offers everything you need to know to get started in hydro … and a perfect refresher course for veterans! This intensive, highly practical training is designed to help persons new to hydro be more productive more quickly and to help persons with limited hydro experience expand their knowledge.
This + Series session will provide an overview of hydropower, allowing attendees to build a solid foundation of hydro basics and facts around such topics as: What Nature Gives Us, How Hydroelectric Power Is Captured, Multiple Beneficial Uses (energy, water supply, irrigation, recreation, navigation and flood Control), Environmental Considerations, New Technologies (Including Ocean and In-Stream).
Operations & Maintenance: Major and Overhauls
This group will share experiences during major plant overhauls and highlight lessons learned during planning and execution. Unique challenges, discoveries, repairs and innovations observed through to the completion of each project will be discussed.
New Development: Your Guide to Small Hydro Development
Small hydro development is integral to continued decarbonization and is expanding to different technologies and applications. Our panelists will explore partnering with indigenous groups, emerging technologies, financing options and various governmental support structures that are helping to spur small hydro development.
Water and Environment: Midwest Environmental Issues
With a large number of Federal Energy Regulatory Commission relicensings coming up in the Midwest of the U.S. in the next few years, owners will be busy working through any number of environmental issues. Many of these issues are common, while some are unique to the Midwest. Our panelists will share their Midwest experiences with resolving environmental issues during relicensing and may even offer solutions to yours during an extended Q&A brainstorming session.
Civil Works and Dam Safety: Government Regulation Post-Incident
How do government agencies react and respond to regulating dam safety after major incidents? What best practices are being put forward? In this moderated discussion of several technical papers, experts from around the world will share their thoughts and experiences.
